Amsterdam, Everything I Hoped For and More

Amsterdam was more than another destination on my travel map. From its beautiful canals and charming streets to its quiet moments of everyday magic, the city left me with memories I know I'll carry for a long time. In this final chapter of my Amsterdam journey, I reflect on the moments that touched me, the lessons I discovered along the way, and why I left Amsterdam with a little piece of my heart behind.

There are some journeys that end when the plane takes off.

And then there are journeys that continue long after you’ve returned home.

Amsterdam was one of those journeys for me.

Even after leaving the Netherlands, I found myself thinking about the canals, the beautiful architecture, the bicycles passing effortlessly through the streets, the little cafés tucked away in charming neighbourhoods and the quiet moments when I simply stopped to take everything in.

I had arrived in Amsterdam excited to explore another beautiful European destination.

I left with something much more valuable.

Perspective.

A collection of memories.

A renewed appreciation for slowing down.

And a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful journeys are not necessarily the ones that take us the farthest.

They are the ones that change something inside us.

This final chapter of my Amsterdam story is therefore less about where I went and more about what the journey gave me.

Because when the photographs are no longer new, when the suitcase has been unpacked and everyday life begins again, what remains is how a place made you feel.

And this is how Amsterdam made me feel.

I Arrived as a Traveller and Left With a Story

When I think about the beginning of my Amsterdam adventure, I remember the excitement.

There was so much I wanted to see.

The canals.

The museums.

The historic streets.

The beautiful architecture.

The neighbourhoods.

The food.

The culture.

I wanted to experience everything.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

I stopped thinking about how much I could see and started thinking about how deeply I could experience what was already in front of me.

That shift made all the difference.

Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, I started paying attention to the little things.

A beautiful reflection on the canal.

A cyclist passing by with flowers in their basket.

The sound of conversations coming from a café.

The changing light across the historic buildings.

A quiet street I hadn’t planned to visit.

These moments may sound small, but they became some of my favourite memories.

And that’s something travel has taught me over and over again.

The moments we don’t plan often become the moments we remember most.

Amsterdam Taught Me to Slow Down

If there is one lesson I will take from Amsterdam, it is the importance of slowing down.

We live in a world that constantly tells us to move faster.

Work harder.

Achieve more.

Do more.

Sometimes we even turn travel into another competition.

How many countries have you visited?

How many attractions did you see?

How many photographs did you take?

But Amsterdam made me question that approach.

What if travel isn’t about how much we can fit into a day?

What if it is about how much we can actually feel?

Walking beside the canals taught me that.

I could have walked past them quickly on my way to the next attraction.

Instead, I stopped.

I watched the boats.

I looked at the buildings.

I listened to the city.

I allowed myself to simply be there.

And there was something incredibly freeing about that.

Sometimes we don’t need another achievement.

We simply need a moment.

A quiet moment.

A beautiful moment.

A moment where we can breathe and say, I am here, and I am grateful.

Beauty Doesn’t Have to Be Loud

Amsterdam also changed the way I think about beauty.

I’m naturally drawn to beautiful places.

I love luxury hotels, stunning landscapes, beautiful fashion, incredible architecture and unforgettable experiences.

But Amsterdam reminded me that beauty doesn’t always have to be extravagant.

Sometimes it’s understated.

A narrow canal.

An old brick building.

A flower sitting on a windowsill.

A bicycle leaning against a bridge.

A cup of coffee enjoyed beside the water.

A beautifully designed doorway.

None of these things are particularly complicated.

Yet together they create something extraordinary.

Amsterdam doesn’t constantly try to impress you.

It simply exists beautifully.

And perhaps that’s why it feels so authentic.

It taught me that elegance can be quiet.

Luxury can be simple.

And beauty can be found in the ordinary.

I Learned to Appreciate the Journey, Not Just the Destination

Before Amsterdam, I already believed that the journey matters.

But this trip reinforced it in a completely different way.

There were moments when I wasn’t heading anywhere particularly important.

I was simply walking.

And those walks became experiences in themselves.

I discovered streets I hadn’t planned to visit.

I found little shops.

I came across beautiful canal views.

I watched locals go about their everyday lives.

I took photographs.

I smiled.

I got a little lost.

And I loved it.

Getting lost used to feel like something I needed to avoid when travelling.

Now, I see it differently.

Sometimes getting lost means you’re open to discovery.

You aren’t following someone else’s version of the perfect experience.

You’re creating your own.

And I think that’s a beautiful way to approach both travel and life.

My Favourite Amsterdam Memories

If someone asked me to choose my favourite moment in Amsterdam, I honestly wouldn’t know where to begin.

There were so many.

But some moments continue to stand out.

Walking beside the canals and watching the city reflect on the water.

Exploring charming neighbourhoods without rushing.

Discovering beautiful architecture around unexpected corners.

Sitting down for coffee and simply watching people pass by.

Trying Dutch treats.

Taking photographs that captured more than just a location.

Experiencing the city from the water.

And those quiet moments when I found myself thinking:

“I’m actually here.”

That feeling never gets old.

No matter how many countries I visit, there is something magical about arriving somewhere that once existed only in your imagination.

A photograph becomes a place.

A dream becomes a memory.

And a destination becomes part of your story.

Travel Has Changed Me

I’ve travelled to many beautiful places, and each destination has given me something different.

Some have taught me about culture.

Some have taught me about history.

Some have challenged me.

Some have inspired me.

Amsterdam reminded me why I started travelling in the first place.

I travel because I am curious.

I want to understand how other people live.

I want to taste different foods.

I want to walk unfamiliar streets.

I want to hear different languages.

I want to see architecture that has survived generations.

I want to stand somewhere completely unfamiliar and realise just how big and beautiful this world is.

Travel has a way of putting life into perspective.

Problems that once seemed enormous can feel smaller when you’re standing beside a centuries-old canal, looking at a city that has witnessed generations come and go.

You realise that life is bigger than the little bubble we sometimes create around ourselves.

There is an entire world waiting to be experienced.

A Message to Women Who Are Waiting to Travel

If there is one thing I want to say to the women following my journeys, it is this:

Don’t keep postponing your life.

Don’t wait until everything is perfect.

Don’t wait until you have the perfect wardrobe.

Don’t wait until you have someone to travel with.

Don’t wait until you feel completely ready.

Sometimes, you simply have to begin.

Travel if you can.

Explore your own city if international travel isn’t possible.

Take yourself somewhere beautiful.

Have lunch alone.

Visit a museum.

Walk somewhere you’ve never been.

Give yourself permission to experience something new.

You deserve experiences.

You deserve memories.

You deserve moments that belong entirely to you.

And if you have been dreaming about seeing Amsterdam, perhaps this is your sign to start planning.

The Luxury of Experiences

One of the biggest things I’ve come to appreciate through travel is that experiences are a form of wealth.

We spend so much time collecting things.

Clothes.

Shoes.

Bags.

Gadgets.

Furniture.

But years from now, I may not remember every material thing I purchased.

I will remember standing beside Amsterdam’s canals.

I will remember the feeling of exploring streets I’d never seen before.

I will remember the food.

The laughter.

The photographs.

The feeling of being somewhere new.

That is why I believe in investing in experiences.

A beautiful hotel is wonderful.

A luxury meal is wonderful.

A beautiful handbag can be wonderful.

But an unforgettable experience stays with you in a completely different way.

It becomes part of who you are.

Amsterdam Made Me Want to Explore More

One of the funny things about travel is that sometimes one destination makes you hungry for the next.

Amsterdam did exactly that.

The more I explored, the more curious I became about the Netherlands.

There were still towns I hadn’t seen.

Places I hadn’t discovered.

Foods I hadn’t tasted.

Stories I hadn’t heard.

And suddenly, leaving Amsterdam didn’t feel like an ending.

It felt like the beginning of another chapter.

That is one of my favourite things about travelling.

Every journey creates another question.

Where next?

And honestly, I love that question.

What I Would Tell Someone Visiting Amsterdam for the First Time

If you are planning your first trip to Amsterdam, my advice is simple.

Come with an open mind.

Don’t expect everything to look exactly like the photographs.

Don’t spend your entire trip trying to recreate someone else’s Instagram feed.

Create your own memories.

Walk.

Explore.

Try the food.

Visit the museums.

Take a canal cruise.

Discover the neighbourhoods.

Talk to people.

Take photographs.

But also put your phone down.

Look around.

Let yourself experience the city without constantly documenting it.

Because there is a difference between capturing a moment and actually living it.

You need both.

But never let the camera become more important than the experience.

My Amsterdam Story in One Sentence

If I had to describe my Amsterdam journey in one sentence, I would say:

Amsterdam taught me that sometimes the most beautiful way to experience life is simply to slow down enough to notice it.

That’s what I’ll remember.

Not just the famous landmarks.

Not just the photographs.

Not just the beautiful canals.

But the feeling.

The feeling of walking without rushing.

The feeling of discovering something unexpected.

The feeling of being completely present.

The feeling of gratitude.

Until We Meet Again, Amsterdam

Eventually, every journey has to end.

There comes a moment when you have to pack your suitcase, say goodbye to the hotel, make your way to the airport and leave behind the streets that have become temporarily familiar.

Leaving Amsterdam was bittersweet.

Part of me was excited about whatever adventure would come next.

But another part of me wanted just one more morning.

One more walk.

One more coffee beside the canal.

One more photograph.

One more opportunity to simply stand still and appreciate the city.

But perhaps that is exactly how it should feel.

If you leave a destination without wanting to return, perhaps you haven’t truly connected with it.

Amsterdam left me wanting more.

More of its canals.

More of its culture.

More of its neighbourhoods.

More of its food.

More of its quiet beauty.

And maybe, one day, I’ll return.

When I do, I know I’ll see the city differently.

Because we never return to a destination as the same person who first visited it.

We change.

We grow.

We experience new things.

And those experiences change the way we see familiar places.

Thank You, Amsterdam

So, Amsterdam, thank you.

Thank you for the beautiful mornings.

Thank you for the canals.

Thank you for the architecture.

Thank you for the bicycles that kept me alert!

Thank you for the food.

Thank you for the quiet moments.

Thank you for the unexpected discoveries.

Thank you for reminding me that life doesn’t always have to move at full speed.

And thank you for becoming another beautiful chapter in my travel story.

To everyone who has followed me through this Amsterdam adventure, thank you for coming along.

Every photograph I’ve shared, every story I’ve told and every experience I’ve captured is my way of bringing a little piece of the world to you.

But I hope my journeys inspire you to do more than simply watch.

I hope they inspire you to explore.

To dream.

To step outside your comfort zone.

To create memories.

To believe that the world is waiting for you.

Because there is so much out there to discover.

And there is still so much life to live.

The Journey Continues

Amsterdam may be the end of this particular series, but it certainly isn’t the end of my journey.

There are still countless cities to explore.

New cultures to discover.

New flavours to taste.

New people to meet.

New stories to tell.

And perhaps most importantly, new lessons waiting to be learned.

That’s what I love about travel.

You never really finish.

There is always another road.

Another flight.

Another city.

Another sunset.

Another story.

So, wherever you are reading this from, I hope you remember one thing:

Don’t just dream about the places you want to see. Start finding a way to experience them.

Your journey doesn’t have to look like mine.

It doesn’t have to be luxurious.

It doesn’t have to be far away.

It simply has to be yours.

Take the trip.

Walk the streets.

Try something new.

Get lost.

Laugh.

Take the photograph.

Put the camera down.

Look around.

And make the memory.

Because one day, when you look back, you won’t remember the things you were too busy to experience.

You’ll remember the moments when you were truly present.

Amsterdam gave me plenty of those.

And for that, I will always be grateful.

Until my next adventure,

Abby ❤️
