Albania, You Surprised Me: The Memories and Lessons I’m Taking Home

adminadminTravel, Travel1 month ago106 Views

Join me as i reflects on my Albania travel experience, from beautiful coastlines and historic cities to unforgettable memories, personal lessons and the moments i took home.

Every destination has a story.

Some stories begin with years of planning.

Some begin with a dream.

Some begin because you have seen beautiful photographs and decided, I need to go there.

And then there are destinations that simply appear on your travel journey and surprise you.

For me, Albania was one of those destinations.

Before I arrived, I knew very little about what my experience would actually feel like.

I had seen the photographs.

I had heard about the beautiful coastline.

I knew there were historic cities, mountains, wonderful food and fascinating culture.

But knowing those things intellectually is very different from experiencing them.

And now, looking back at my journey, I can honestly say that Albania gave me far more than I expected.

It gave me beautiful memories.

It gave me moments of discovery.

It gave me quiet moments of reflection.

It introduced me to new places, new flavours and new perspectives.

And perhaps most importantly, it reminded me why I continue to travel.

Some Destinations Stay With You

I have travelled to many beautiful places.

Every destination has something different to offer.

But every now and then, you visit somewhere that leaves a slightly deeper impression.

Not necessarily because it was the most luxurious.

Not because everything was perfect.

Not because you managed to see every attraction.

Sometimes a destination stays with you simply because of how you felt while you were there.

That is what Albania did for me.

There was something about the combination of the scenery, the history, the people and the feeling of discovery that made this journey particularly memorable.

I did not feel like I was simply ticking another country off my travel list.

I felt like I was discovering a story.

And I was becoming part of that story, even if only for a short time.

The Beauty I Will Remember

If I close my eyes and think about Albania, one of the first things that comes to mind is the colour blue.

The blue of the sea.

The blue of the sky.

The way sunlight reflected across the water.

The beautiful contrast between the coastline and the mountains.

There were moments when I simply stopped and looked.

No camera.

No phone.

No social media.

Just me and the view.

Those moments are often the ones that stay with me the longest.

Because photographs can capture what something looks like.

But they cannot completely capture how it feels to stand there.

They cannot capture the breeze.

The warmth of the sun.

The sound of the water.

The feeling of being somewhere completely different from your everyday life.

That is why I believe so strongly in travelling.

There are some things you simply have to experience for yourself.

The Albanian Riviera Will Stay in My Memories

There was something particularly special about the Albanian Riviera.

The coastline had this wonderful mixture of beauty and ruggedness.

The sea looked inviting.

The mountains created a dramatic backdrop.

The roads offered beautiful views.

And every turn seemed to reveal another photograph waiting to happen.

But beyond the photographs, what I remember most is the feeling of freedom.

There is something about being beside the sea that makes you breathe a little deeper.

You stop checking the time.

You stop thinking about everything waiting for you back home.

For a moment, you simply exist.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest luxuries travel can give us.

Not another expensive purchase.

Not another material possession.

But time.

Time to pause.

Time to think.

Time to appreciate.

Time to simply be.

Ksamil Gave Me a Different Kind of Beauty

Ksamil was one of those places that made me understand the power of nature.

The beautiful waters.

The coastline.

The sunlight.

The scenery.

Everything came together to create those moments that make you reach for your camera almost automatically.

But again, I learned something important.

Sometimes you have to stop photographing the moment and start living it.

I wanted to remember the view.

But I also wanted to remember how I felt looking at it.

Peaceful.

Grateful.

Present.

Happy.

Those feelings are much harder to capture in a photograph.

And they are often much more valuable.

The Charm of Albania’s Historic Cities

While the coast gave me moments of relaxation and wonder, Albania’s historic cities gave me something else.

Perspective.

Walking through places like Berat and Gjirokastër reminded me how much history exists beyond what we see on the surface.

Old buildings.

Stone streets.

Traditional homes.

Ancient walls.

Historic landmarks.

These places have witnessed generations of people living, loving, working, celebrating and facing challenges.

And now, centuries later, we walk through those same streets as visitors.

That thought stayed with me.

Travel can make history feel personal.

Instead of reading about the past in a book, you can stand where people actually lived.

You can touch the walls.

Walk the streets.

See the architecture.

And imagine the lives that came before you.

Berat Taught Me to Appreciate the Details

Berat was particularly memorable for me because of its visual beauty.

The traditional houses climbing the hillside.

The historic atmosphere.

The views.

The narrow streets.

But what I remember most is the feeling of slowing down.

There was no need to rush.

I could walk.

Look around.

Take photographs.

Stop for a moment.

Continue.

That slower pace made me appreciate the details.

And that is something I want to carry beyond Albania.

We often live life at such a fast pace that we stop noticing the small things.

We rush through breakfast.

We rush to work.

We rush through conversations.

We rush through our days.

And then we wonder where the time went.

Travel reminds me to slow down.

Albania reminded me again.

Gjirokastër Reminded Me That Beauty Has History

Gjirokastër gave me another opportunity to appreciate the relationship between beauty and history.

There was something incredibly atmospheric about walking through its old streets.

The stone architecture.

The hills.

The views.

The traditional character.

It felt like a place with a story.

And I found myself thinking about how important it is to preserve these places.

When we travel, we sometimes think only about what we are going to take away from a destination.

The photographs.

The memories.

The experiences.

But travel should also make us think about what we can help preserve.

Culture.

History.

Traditions.

Architecture.

Local communities.

These things are part of what makes a destination special.

The People Made the Journey More Meaningful

Beautiful scenery can attract you to a destination.

But people are what often make you remember it.

That was true for me in Albania.

The smiles.

The conversations.

The hospitality.

The small interactions.

The moments of connection.

These things may not appear in a travel itinerary, but they become part of the story.

And I think that is one of the most beautiful things about travelling.

You leave your home and enter someone else’s world.

For a short time, you experience life from a different perspective.

You discover that despite differences in language, culture or background, people everywhere share many of the same basic emotions.

We laugh.

We celebrate.

We love.

We work.

We worry.

We dream.

We hope.

Travel has a way of reminding us of our shared humanity.

Food Became Part of My Albanian Story

I always say that food is part of the travel experience.

And Albania gave me plenty of opportunities to prove that point!

Every meal became another opportunity to discover something.

Different flavours.

Different ingredients.

Different ways of preparing food.

Different traditions.

And sometimes, the simplest meals were the most memorable.

That is something I have learned over the years.

You do not always remember the most expensive meal.

Sometimes you remember the one where you laughed the most.

Or the one where you discovered a new flavour.

Or the one you enjoyed while looking at an incredible view.

Food connects us to places.

And when I think about Albania, food will always be part of the memory.

Albania Reminded Me to Be Curious

One of the biggest lessons I took from this journey is the importance of curiosity.

We can become comfortable with what we already know.

We know the destinations everyone talks about.

We know the restaurants everyone recommends.

We know the hotels that appear repeatedly on social media.

We know the places that dominate our feeds.

But there is an entire world beyond the algorithm.

There are destinations that have not yet become everyone’s favourite.

There are streets that have not gone viral.

There are restaurants that do not have millions of views.

There are beautiful places waiting to be discovered.

Albania reminded me of that.

And I want to keep that curiosity alive.

Sometimes the Unknown Is the Most Exciting Part

There is a certain excitement that comes with travelling somewhere you do not completely understand.

You arrive with questions.

You do not know exactly what to expect.

You have to observe.

You have to learn.

You have to adapt.

And eventually, the unfamiliar begins to feel familiar.

That transformation is one of my favourite parts of travelling.

At first, you are a visitor.

Then you begin to recognise the streets.

You know where to go for breakfast.

You know which direction the sea is.

You start recognising certain places.

And before you know it, you are leaving.

That is always bittersweet.

The Moment I Knew I Was Leaving

There is always a strange feeling when a trip begins to come to an end.

Your suitcase starts filling up again.

The clothes you carefully packed are now mixed together.

Your camera roll is full.

Your phone has memories you already know you will look back at.

And suddenly, you realise:

I am leaving.

Part of you is ready to go home.

You miss your familiar surroundings.

Your people.

Your routine.

But another part of you wants just one more day.

One more morning.

One more meal.

One more walk.

One more sunset.

That is how I felt about Albania.

I was grateful for the journey.

But I was not quite ready for it to end.

What I Am Taking Home From Albania

When I think about what I am bringing home from this journey, it is not just souvenirs.

It is not just photographs.

It is not just content.

I am taking home memories.

I am taking home gratitude.

I am taking home new perspectives.

And I am taking home a renewed appreciation for discovery.

Albania reminded me that the world is still full of surprises.

That there are places waiting for us to explore.

That beauty exists in unexpected places.

And that we should never stop being curious.

A Lesson About Slowing Down

One of the biggest lessons I am taking from Albania is simple:

Slow down.

We do not have to rush through every chapter of our lives.

We do not have to constantly chase the next thing.

We do not have to measure our lives only by achievements.

Sometimes we need to stop and appreciate where we are.

Look around.

Take a breath.

Celebrate how far we have come.

Enjoy the people around us.

Travel has taught me this repeatedly.

But Albania gave me another beautiful reminder.

A Lesson About Choosing Experiences

Life is made up of moments.

Some of them are ordinary.

Some are difficult.

Some are unforgettable.

And I have become increasingly convinced that we should make room for experiences.

Travel.

Dinner with people we love.

A beautiful sunset.

A spontaneous adventure.

A conversation that changes our perspective.

A new culture.

A new city.

A new country.

These are the things we remember.

So if there is somewhere you have always wanted to visit, start planning.

If there is an experience you have been postponing, ask yourself why.

Life is happening now.

Not someday.

Now.

A Lesson for Women: Do Not Keep Postponing Your Life

This is something particularly close to my heart.

As women, we often carry so many responsibilities.

We take care of people.

We build careers.

We raise families.

We support others.

We make sacrifices.

And sometimes, without even realising it, we put ourselves last.

We tell ourselves:

One day.

When the children are older.

When work settles down.

When I have more money.

When everything is perfect.

But life does not always wait for the perfect moment.

Sometimes you have to create the moment.

Travel has been one of the ways I have reminded myself that I am allowed to live fully too.

I am allowed to explore.

I am allowed to rest.

I am allowed to experience beautiful things.

I am allowed to create memories.

And I want every woman reading this to remember that.

Do not disappear inside your responsibilities.

There is still a beautiful life waiting for you too.

Luxury Is More Than a Beautiful Hotel

I have always loved beautiful experiences.

Beautiful hotels.

Beautiful restaurants.

Beautiful fashion.

Beautiful destinations.

And there is nothing wrong with enjoying those things.

But travel continues to teach me that luxury is much bigger than material things.

Luxury is having time.

Luxury is freedom.

Luxury is peace.

Luxury is waking up somewhere beautiful.

Luxury is having the opportunity to explore.

Luxury is sharing a meal with someone you love.

Luxury is feeling safe enough to slow down.

Luxury is being able to say, I am here, and I am enjoying this moment.

Albania reminded me of that.

My Favourite Albanian Memories

If I had to choose the moments I will remember most, they would not necessarily be one particular attraction.

I will remember the coastline.

I will remember the blue water.

I will remember the historic streets.

I will remember the food.

I will remember the architecture.

I will remember the views.

I will remember the quiet moments.

I will remember the excitement of discovering somewhere new.

And I will remember how it felt to step outside my familiar world and experience something different.

That is what travel gives us.

Memories that become part of who we are.

Would I Return to Albania?

Travel has a funny way of creating unfinished stories.

You visit somewhere and immediately realise that you did not see everything.

You discover one place and start wondering about another.

You leave with a list of things you would love to experience next time.

Albania definitely gave me that feeling.

There is more to explore.

More towns.

More coastline.

More food.

More history.

More landscapes.

More stories.

And perhaps that is a good thing.

A destination does not have to give you everything in one visit.

Sometimes leaving with more questions than answers is what makes you want to return.

My Final Albanian Sunset

If there is one image I would choose to represent my Albanian journey, it would be a sunset.

The kind of sunset where you naturally become quiet.

You stop scrolling.

You stop thinking about tomorrow.

You simply look.

The sky changes.

The light softens.

The day slowly comes to an end.

And for a moment, everything feels still.

That is how I want to remember Albania.

Not simply as a country I visited.

But as a collection of moments.

A collection of colours.

A collection of stories.

A collection of feelings.

Albania, Thank You

So, Albania, thank you.

Thank you for the beautiful views.

Thank you for the coastline.

Thank you for the history.

Thank you for the food.

Thank you for the people.

Thank you for the surprises.

Thank you for reminding me that there are still places in this world waiting to amaze us.

Thank you for giving me memories I will carry with me.

And thank you for reminding me that travel is not simply about going somewhere.

It is about becoming more open to the world.

Until We Meet Again, Albania 🇦🇱

As I close this chapter of my Albanian adventure, I find myself feeling incredibly grateful.

Grateful that I went.

Grateful that I explored.

Grateful that I allowed myself to be surprised.

And grateful for every little moment that became part of the journey.

Albania started as another destination on my travel map.

But it became a story.

A story of discovery.

A story of beauty.

A story of slowing down.

A story of curiosity.

And a story of remembering to enjoy the journey while I am living it.

That is perhaps my biggest takeaway.

Do not wait until the journey is over before you appreciate it.

Enjoy the road.

Enjoy the people.

Enjoy the unexpected moments.

Enjoy the beautiful views.

Enjoy the mistakes.

Enjoy the surprises.

Enjoy the life you are living right now.

Because one day, you will look back and realise that those ordinary moments were actually the memories you were waiting for.

Albania, you surprised me.

You challenged my expectations.

You gave me beautiful memories.

And you left me with a little more curiosity about this incredible world we get to call home.

I came looking for a new destination.

I left with a new story.

And that is what I will always love about travel.

There is always another story waiting.

Another country.

Another culture.

Another table.

Another sunset.

Another adventure.

So, until the next one…

Keep exploring. Keep dreaming. Keep living intentionally. And never stop discovering the beauty that exists beyond what you already know.

With love,

Abby ❤️
