Exploring Albania: Beautiful Coastlines, Charming Cities and Hidden Treasures | Abby Lifestyle Adventures

There Was So Much More to Albania Than I Expected

When I first arrived in Albania, I knew I wanted to explore.

But what I did not expect was just how much there would be to discover.

After my first impressions of this fascinating country, I quickly realised that Albania could not be understood from one city, one beach or one beautiful photograph.

There were layers to it.

There was the energy of Tirana.

The history of its old towns.

The dramatic mountains.

The turquoise waters of the Albanian Riviera.

The charm of its villages.

The flavours of its food.

The warmth of its people.

And then there were the unexpected little moments in between.

Those moments when you turn a corner and discover a beautiful view.

When you stumble across a charming café.

When the sun begins to set over the water.

When you find yourself sitting quietly somewhere, simply taking everything in.

That is the Albania I want to share with you.

Not just the postcard version.

The Albania I experienced.

The Albania that surprised me.

The Albania that made me slow down and look around.

Exploring Tirana: Albania’s Colourful Capital

My exploration of Albania naturally began with Tirana.

The capital has a very different energy from the quieter coastal destinations, and I loved experiencing that contrast.

Tirana feels young, lively and constantly in motion.

There are cafés filled with conversation, restaurants serving local and international cuisine, colourful streets, busy public spaces and people going about their everyday lives.

But beneath the modern energy is a fascinating history.

That combination made exploring the city particularly interesting for me.

I could spend part of the day enjoying the modern side of Tirana and then find myself standing somewhere that reminded me of how much the country has changed over the decades.

One of the things I love about travelling is seeing how a city evolves.

Cities are living things.

They change with their people.

They absorb history.

They adapt.

They grow.

And Tirana felt like a city very much in the process of writing its next chapter.

Skanderbeg Square and the Heart of Tirana

One of the places that gives you a real sense of Tirana is Skanderbeg Square.

It is a central gathering point and an important part of the city’s identity.

Standing there, I found myself taking in the scale of the space and the surrounding architecture.

It was one of those moments when I simply wanted to stop and observe.

People walking by.

Visitors taking photographs.

Locals going about their day.

The city moving around me.

I always find these ordinary scenes fascinating.

When we travel, we can become so focused on seeing attractions that we forget to watch the destination actually living.

Sometimes sitting in a public square and observing everyday life can tell you more about a city than ticking ten tourist attractions off a list.

So I allowed myself to slow down.

To watch.

To breathe.

To enjoy Tirana as it was.

The Colour and Character of Albania

Something else I noticed while exploring Albania was the country’s sense of colour.

There were colourful buildings, vibrant cafés, beautiful natural scenery and plenty of visual details that made walking around with a camera particularly enjoyable.

As someone who loves creating content while travelling, Albania gave me plenty to work with.

But I also reminded myself not to experience the country only through my camera lens.

That can be one of the traps of travelling in the social media era.

You arrive somewhere beautiful and immediately think:

What photograph can I get?

What video should I make?

What should I post?

But sometimes the best thing you can do is put the camera down.

Look at the view.

Feel the atmosphere.

Listen to the sounds around you.

And simply be present.

I did that more than once in Albania.

And I am glad I did.

Because some experiences do not need to be captured to be meaningful.

From City Life to Coastal Beauty

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

One of my favourite things about Albania is how quickly the scenery can change.

You can experience city life and then move towards landscapes that feel completely different.

Eventually, the call of the coast becomes impossible to ignore.

And when I began exploring Albania’s Riviera, I understood why the country’s coastline has attracted so much attention.

The Adriatic and Ionian coasts create a spectacular backdrop, but the Ionian side in particular offers some incredibly dramatic scenery.

The mountains meet the sea.

The roads wind through beautiful landscapes.

Small coastal communities appear along the way.

And then suddenly, you see the water.

That first glimpse of intensely blue Mediterranean water is something I will remember.

The Albanian Riviera Had My Heart

There are certain places where you naturally slow down.

The Albanian Riviera was one of them.

I could look at the sea for what felt like forever.

There is something about being beside the water that changes your rhythm.

You breathe differently.

You think differently.

You stop worrying about the next thing on your schedule.

You simply exist in the moment.

And that was exactly what I wanted from this part of my journey.

The coastline is beautiful in a way that feels almost effortless.

The combination of blue water, mountains and sunlight creates views that are incredibly photogenic, but even more beautiful when experienced in person.

I found myself taking photographs, of course.

But I also found myself just standing there.

Taking it all in.

Sarandë: Where the Coast Comes Alive

Sarandë was another fascinating part of my Albanian adventure.

The coastal city has a lively holiday atmosphere, with restaurants, cafés, accommodation and beautiful views across the Ionian Sea.

It is easy to understand why it has become such a popular base for travellers exploring southern Albania.

But what I enjoyed most was the combination of relaxation and exploration.

One moment you can be enjoying the waterfront.

The next, you can be heading out to discover another part of the region.

And that is one of the things that makes southern Albania so appealing.

You do not have to choose between a relaxing holiday and an adventurous one.

You can have both.

Ksamil and Those Beautiful Blue Waters

Then came Ksamil.

If there is one Albanian destination that has probably appeared on your social media feed, it is Ksamil.

The images are everywhere.

Beautiful beaches.

Crystal-clear water.

Small islands.

Boats.

Blue skies.

And I can confirm that seeing it in person is a completely different experience from seeing it on a screen.

The colours are beautiful.

The water can look almost unreal.

And the surrounding landscape creates that perfect Mediterranean holiday feeling.

But what I appreciated most was simply having the opportunity to experience it.

There is something special about seeing a destination that you have previously only seen through photographs.

It is like watching a picture come to life.

Discovering Albania’s Historic Side

But Albania is not just beaches.

Far from it.

Some of my most interesting moments came when I moved away from the coastline and began discovering the country’s historic towns.

This is where Albania really started to reveal another side of itself to me.

The old architecture.

The stone streets.

The hilltop settlements.

The traditional homes.

The ancient fortifications.

The stories behind the buildings.

It reminded me that a destination can be beautiful and fascinating at the same time.

And I wanted to learn more.

Berat: A Walk Through History

default

Berat was one of the places that immediately captured my attention.

Known for its distinctive historic architecture and hillside setting, Berat has a charm that feels completely different from Tirana or the Riviera.

The city is often associated with its white Ottoman-era houses climbing the slopes, creating a beautiful visual scene.

But the real experience for me was walking through it.

There is something wonderful about exploring a historic city on foot.

You notice details that you would miss from a car.

Old doors.

Stone walls.

Small pathways.

Windows.

Rooftops.

Little cafés.

People living their everyday lives among buildings that carry centuries of history.

That mixture of past and present is what makes historic destinations so special to me.

The View From Berat Castle

Exploring Berat Castle gave me another perspective on the city.

Whenever I visit a destination with a hilltop viewpoint, I always want to make the climb.

There is something satisfying about earning the view.

And once you reach the top and look out across the landscape, you understand the city differently.

From above, the streets and buildings become part of a much larger picture.

You can see how the city fits into its surroundings.

You can appreciate the mountains.

The river.

The rooftops.

The landscape stretching beyond.

I stood there taking it all in and thought about how many generations had stood in that same place before me.

That is one of the beautiful things about travel.

For a brief moment, you become part of a much bigger story.

Gjirokastër: Albania’s Stone City

If Berat showed me one side of Albania’s history, Gjirokastër revealed another.

The city is famous for its stone architecture and dramatic hillside setting.

Walking through Gjirokastër felt like entering a different world.

The streets, buildings and landscape create an atmosphere that is incredibly distinctive.

There is a sense of age and permanence.

And yet, life continues around it.

People live there.

Restaurants operate there.

Visitors explore.

Children grow up there.

Businesses open their doors.

That mixture of history and everyday life is something I find fascinating.

A historic city does not become a museum simply because it is old.

It remains a living place.

And Gjirokastër reminded me of that.

Getting Lost Was Part of the Fun

One of my favourite things to do when exploring a new city is to get slightly lost.

Not dangerously lost!

Just enough to step away from the obvious tourist route.

Sometimes you discover the best places that way.

A quiet street.

A small restaurant.

A beautiful doorway.

A hidden viewpoint.

A local shop.

A café you would never have found if you had followed your itinerary perfectly.

Albania gave me plenty of opportunities to do exactly that.

And I loved it.

Because travel should not always feel like a checklist.

You do not have to see everything.

You do not have to photograph everything.

You do not have to rush from one attraction to another.

Sometimes you just need to wander.

The Food Was Part of the Adventure

If you have followed my travels for a while, you already know that food is always part of my experience.

I believe you cannot truly explore a destination without tasting it.

Food tells stories.

It tells you about history.

Geography.

Family.

Tradition.

Culture.

And Albania has a wonderful culinary identity shaped by its Balkan and Mediterranean influences.

Fresh seafood along the coast.

Grilled meats.

Fresh vegetables.

Cheeses.

Pastries.

Bread.

Local fruits.

And delicious dishes that are perfect for sharing.

I loved the opportunity to sit down and enjoy meals without rushing.

Because sometimes dinner is not simply dinner.

It is an experience.

It is conversation.

It is laughter.

It is discovering something new.

And those moments become part of the travel memory.

The Simple Pleasure of Albanian Hospitality

Another thing that stayed with me was the warmth of the people.

There is something special about being welcomed when you are far from home.

A friendly smile can make an unfamiliar place feel instantly more comfortable.

A recommendation from a local can lead you somewhere you would never have discovered yourself.

A simple conversation can give you a completely different understanding of a destination.

This is why I believe people are such an important part of travel.

You can visit the most beautiful country in the world, but if you do not connect with anyone or experience the culture, you are missing something.

Albania gave me opportunities to do more than simply look.

It gave me opportunities to connect.

The Mountains Were a Beautiful Surprise

Before travelling to Albania, I naturally associated the country with beaches.

But the mountains were one of my biggest surprises.

Albania’s landscape is incredibly diverse, and the mountains add another dimension to the journey.

There is something majestic about travelling through mountainous scenery.

The roads twist and turn.

The views keep changing.

Small communities appear in the distance.

And suddenly you realise just how dramatic the country’s geography really is.

It reminded me that Albania is not simply a beach destination.

It is a country for people who love variety.

If you want history, you can find it.

If you want beaches, you can find them.

If you want mountains, you can find them.

If you want food, culture, adventure or relaxation, Albania has something to offer.

The Beauty of Slowing Down

One of the unexpected gifts of this journey was learning to slow down.

We live such busy lives.

There is always another email.

Another deadline.

Another meeting.

Another responsibility.

And sometimes we forget how to simply be.

Travel gives me permission to step away from that.

To wake up somewhere unfamiliar.

To walk without a specific destination.

To sit somewhere beautiful.

To watch the sunset.

To enjoy a meal.

To talk to someone.

To breathe.

Albania reminded me that slowing down does not mean doing nothing.

Sometimes slowing down means finally having enough space to notice everything.

Albania Through My Camera

Of course, I could not explore Albania without taking photographs and creating memories through video.

There was so much to capture.

The coastline.

The architecture.

The streets.

The food.

The landscapes.

The people.

The sunsets.

The little details.

But one of the things I have learned as a content creator is that there is a difference between documenting a moment and actually experiencing it.

So I tried to do both.

I wanted to bring the beauty of Albania home with me, but I also wanted to make sure I was actually living the journey.

Because years from now, I do not want to remember only the content I created.

I want to remember how I felt.

The Little Moments I Will Remember

Interestingly, some of my favourite Albanian memories were not necessarily the biggest attractions.

They were the little things.

A beautiful view appearing unexpectedly.

A delicious meal.

A peaceful morning.

Walking through an unfamiliar street.

Watching the sea.

Laughing.

Taking photographs.

Discovering something new.

These are the moments that make travel personal.

You can research a destination for months.

You can create the perfect itinerary.

You can book beautiful accommodation.

But you cannot plan every memorable moment.

Sometimes the best ones simply happen.

And that is part of the magic.

Albania Felt Like a Discovery

The further I travelled through Albania, the more I understood why this country had captured my attention.

There was always another layer.

Another landscape.

Another story.

Another road.

Another beautiful view.

Another reason to stop and explore.

And perhaps that is what I loved most.

Albania did not feel like a destination where everything had already been discovered for me.

It gave me space to discover.

To wander.

To be curious.

To create my own memories.

And I think that is something many travellers are searching for today.

Not just another beautiful destination.

But an authentic experience.

What Exploring Albania Taught Me

Every destination leaves something with me.

Albania reminded me that beauty can exist outside the places that dominate travel magazines and social media.

It reminded me to stay curious.

It reminded me that history makes a destination richer.

It reminded me that food is culture.

It reminded me that people are part of the journey.

And it reminded me that some of the best travel experiences happen when you leave a little room for spontaneity.

I arrived wanting to explore Albania.

I left feeling like Albania had explored me too.

It challenged some of my expectations.

It introduced me to new experiences.

And it gave me memories I know I will carry for a long time.

My Albanian Adventure Is Far From Over

Looking back at this part of my journey, I realise just how much Albania managed to give me.

From the lively streets of Tirana to the historic beauty of Berat and Gjirokastër.

From the breathtaking Albanian Riviera to the beautiful waters of Ksamil.

From mountains and landscapes to delicious food and warm hospitality.

Every part of the journey revealed something different.

And yet, there was still so much I wanted to know.

Because exploring a destination is one thing.

Knowing how to travel it well is another.

What is the best time to visit?

Where should you stay?

How many days do you really need?

Which destinations should be on your itinerary?

What should you eat?

How do you move around?

What should you know before you go?

These are the questions I found myself asking as my Albanian adventure continued.

And that is exactly where we are heading next.

Until Next Time, Albania

Albania gave me beautiful views, fascinating history, delicious food and unforgettable moments.

But more than anything, it gave me the joy of discovery.

It reminded me why I never want to stop exploring.

Because there is always another country.

Another culture.

Another story.

Another road.

Another sunset.

Another reason to pack a suitcase and go.

And if you are considering Albania for your next adventure, I hope my journey has shown you that there is so much more here than meets the eye.

Come for the beaches.

Stay for the history.

Explore the cities.

Taste the food.

Meet the people.

Take the scenic route.

And most importantly, allow yourself to be surprised.

Because sometimes the destinations we discover unexpectedly become the ones we remember most.

And my Albanian story is not over yet.

In Part 3, I will be sharing The Ultimate Albania Travel Guide, with everything I learned that can help you plan your own unforgettable Albanian adventure.

You can read Part 1 here

Until then, keep exploring, keep dreaming and remember that the world is far too beautiful to stay in one place.
